Alapine
Village Alapine Village, begun in 1997 by three visionary women, is an intentional women’s community located in rural Alabama atop a beautiful 1600 foot mountain.. The land is rolling and wooded with access to a flowing mountain river. The community is a neighborhood of privately owned 2-acre wooded lots with well maintained roads. The developers acquired an additional 300 acres adjacent to Alapine Village, with frontage on a river and a combination of hardwood and pine forests. Many hiking paths have been created all the way to the river, as well as to a beautiful knoll with a gorgeous view of the mountain range. We have full-time residents, part-time or seasonal residents, with some non-resident lot owners. Living structures include wooden homes and cabins, cordwood masonry and earth sheltered home, manufactured homes; some lots provide RV hookups. Electricity and city water are available and some members use rain water collection, wood heat, solar energy, propane, and composting toilets. Options for short or long-term visitors are available.
The Alapine Community Association, Inc. (ACA), a non-profit with 501(c)3 status, was started in 2006 by members of Alapine Village. ACA was created to meet the special needs of a rural community population which is geographically isolated from county and state services and resources. One of our goals has been to create a community center. Two community members generously donated a lot, and through donations from other members and friends, we are recycling a used mobile home and we are busy renovating it ourselves. Many of our members are working toward making our homes, gardens, and community buildings sustainable, with the ability to survive off grid. The community center will provide space for meetings, game nights, pot lucks, movie nights, and dances. Another one of our community goals is aging in place as much as possible and by creating community facilities we can provide services such as meals, some adult day care services, and companionship. We are a
diverse group of women who celebrate many spiritual paths,
pursue a variety of outdoor activities, enjoy vegan to omnivorous diets, and have a
commitment to resolving conflict through Nonviolent
Communication (NVC) meetings.
Dogs and cats are welcome, with some restrictions.
No hunting or fishing is permitted on any of the designated land. We range in age from 50-75 with the goal of expanding into
an intergenerational community, especially welcoming younger
women. High speed
internet allows some members to work from their home. Others work in the medical field, social services,
local assisted living facility, and many are retired.
We are within two hours of several major cities.
